Featuring Lally House

The other half of the legendary duo we all know as “Frank and Lally”. Frank was awarded the prestigious “Contemporary Longrifle Association - Pioneer Award” in 2004 and this past August during the 10th anniversary meeting of the CLA in Lexington, Kentucky, Lally became the first female artist to be bestowed this well deserved honor.

The likes of this husband and wife team, from Paris, Kentucky is indeed rare in the art world. Independently each artist’ work is personally distinctive, yet we most always hear their names together and much like salt and pepper, their works of art whether individually or combined, always seems to compliment one another.

In response to quizzing about her work, Lally recently stated, “It has been a dream of mine for years for “our” work to be recognized as “art” instead of “craft”. It [quillwork, and especially gunwork] always seems to be associated with “re-creation or replication” rather than identified as unique and original creations of artwork produced using 18th century methods, materials and design elements. I take great pains to create my own original designs and generally do not copy or reproduce other existing pieces of quillwork. I always use brain-tan for my pieces and I take great pride in using natural dying methods and colors that were used during the mid-18th century by the Eastern Woodland Indian tribes.

In the last several years Lally has become known for unbelievable “moose hair” embroidery; often these days incorporating it into her artwork along with porcupine quills, enhancing the texture and impression of the overall piece of art. One such piece has tiny little “eggs”, (the ends of a multitude of individual moose hairs) tucked into a tiny little bird’s nest… just incredible!
