M. Sheetz -Circa 1790
Martin Sheets died January 5, 1808. He was the son of Philip Sheetz who apprenticed to George Unkafare in York County, Pennsylvania, to “learn the arts and mysteries of the trade”. Philip died in 1793 leaving the business to his 17-year-old son. This rifle from the 1790’s is quite possibly a very important link in the evolution of gunbuilding styles from Pennsylvania, down the valley of Virginia; and continuing into frontier Kentucky. This fully evolved golden age firearm is a perfect example of what was being used in the infant years of the Commonwealth and now so very famously known world wide as the
“Kentucky Rifle”
